In partnership with Sylvandale Middle School, Alearn, ExD (Exhibition District), Creatrix Institute, and a host of teachers and volunteers, Art is Power held Reading My World: An Integration of Art and Math at Sylvandale Middle School in San Jose, California. The month long project integrated math, creativity, social awareness, empathy, and collaboration to create a mural representing statistics such as local self-identified race/identity, educational attainment, crime, and water consumption.
Connecting students to local artists, organizations, and other community members cultivated social awareness, generated questions, and revealed stereotypes. This enabled students to understand and re-imagine themselves, their community, and their ability to influence change.
While fun and engaging, the project applied practical skills that students use to better navigate and improve the world they inhabit. The artwork was beautiful, the students and their families were extremely appreciative, and the school really got behind it as well.
Art is Power would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work and dedication to this example of socially relevant project based learning through the arts. To view more of the beautiful pictures by Mary Cheung, Josh Hires, and Patrice Milillo, visit instagram at artispower_
