The Power of the Arts to Liberate

Any powerful tool can be wielded for constructive or destructive purposes, and the arts are no exception. The arts and music can be weaponized as was the case with Nazi and fascist Propaganda art and modern advertising. The arts can also liberate us like Jazz, Hip Hop and graffiti art in the Bronx, the art of the children of Theresienstadt Concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, Tango in Argentina, and Capoeira in Brazil. These art forms were developed consciously and unconsciously to provide identity and purpose for oppressed peoples who refused to accept their oppressor’s versions of “reality.” When approached as an introspective tool, the process of creating art takes us to places that we never knew existed to uncover truth in a world that can seem buried under lies, deception, and ignorance.
